Position Specific Description

This position is part of the growing Renewable Natural Gas Team within NextEra Energy’s Power Generation Division. This role can be based in Palm Beach Gardens, FL or Houston, TX

 

The Principal Gas Optimization Engineer must have solid written and verbal communication, technical, and analytical skills. The preferred candidate should possess extensive knowledge and experience with all aspects of landfill Gas Collection and Control System (“GCCS”) design, operations, and management. The role requires at least seven (7) to  ten (10) years of relevant experience at U.S. landfills subject to Federal New Source Performance Standards (“NSPS”) requirements.   

 

The Principal PGD Gas Optimization Engineer must demonstrate a strong aptitude in mechanical work, understands relevant regulatory requirements, is experienced in managing teams of up to ten (10) individuals, and is capable of reading and implementing GCCS plans, equipment operating and maintenance manuals, and schematics. Ideal candidate will need to be commercially minded, detailed oriented with strong analytical abilities, and can approach projects with creativity and entrepreneurial thinking. The individual will interface with multiple organizations within and outside of the division they support. The ability to build consensus and make quick, accurate and fact-based decisions are critical to success. Experience in a matrix environment is a strong plus, as is a high tolerance for uncertainty and flexibility to deal with unanticipated deliverables and tight deadlines.

 

Position Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain close working relationships with customers and stakeholders
  • Forecast, analyze current production trends, and proactively recommend productivity improvements based on analytical data and optimized measures
  • Monitor site data of  technicians performing wellfield tuning efforts to forecast and provide optimized solutions for production improvements
  • Planning, directing, and coordinating certain landfill gas collection system design, construction, and commissioning activities by contractors.
  • Interact/supervise/manage vendors and/or sub-contractors needed to assist with operating, monitoring, and maintenance of the GCCS.
  • Be capable of reviewing other landfills operations as part of development activities, and those considered for acquisition, as to past GCCS operations and maintenance practices, and recommending immediate and future changes to such practices to optimize gas recovery, gas quality and/or regulatory compliance.
  • Proactively work with landfill partners and peer review their GCCS plans to optimize and increase efficiency of their gas collection systems.
  • Meet with landfill partners (and tour their landfills) on a routine basis to stay abreast of their landfill construction, expansion, and filling plans.
  • Collect all available landfill information and prepare (and update when appropriate) gas production forecasts for each of the landfills that the Company is (or considering) operating at.
  • Ensure that the Company’s GCCS-related operations are compliant with applicable state and Federal NSPS regulations.
  • Stay abreast of new developments, technologies and regulations impacting the GCCS industry.
  • Leverage industry relationships to provide leads that result in growth for the Company.
  • Support the annual budget process and monthly reviews, as required
  • Strictly follow and enforce Company safety policies and administer Company policies and procedures with direct reports, contractors, and vendors.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding extensive engineering programs and activities
  •  Manages one or more programs of complex diversity and scope which are of critical importance to overall company objectives
  • Develop flow enhancement production solutions for physical or potential assets (or portfolio of assets)
  • Implements production grade mathematical performance benchmarking and unit testing to verify and
  • Determines key performance indicators for algorithmic products and contributes to monitoring and iterative product improvement
  • Prepares documentation, technical reports, quantitative analyses, and presentation material for internal and external use
  • Supports collaborations in cross-functional workstreams

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s in Engineering 
  • Accreditation from a professional organization and/or continued education classes supporting GCCS design, operations and maintenance considered a strong plus.
  • Significant analytical skillset
  • Able to solve complex problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to build relationships.
  • Strong influencing and interpersonal skills
  • Six Sigma Certification; Yellow Belt or higher (preferred)
