Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy/Florida Power & Light is seeking an experienced professional to join the Power Generation Division Engineering & Operations Support Services organization as part of the Civil Engineering Fleet Team.  The ideal candidate is highly capable, well organized, results oriented, process focused and an effective communicator who can build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

 

Overview and Expectations:

Position responsibilities involve managing all aspects of FPL’s power plant cooling reservoir dam infrastructure for three sites including appurtenant water resource and conveyance facilities. Responsibilities also involve administering corporate dam safety program and driving continuous process improvement while assuring reservoir maintenance and upgrades are consistent with proper operation of high hazard dams.

 

Duties:

  • Conduct quarterly, semi-annual and annual dam safety inspections as well as special operation and maintenance inspections as needed.
  • Perform necessary activities to complete required regulatory certifications for dams.
  • Perform or supervise geotechnical/structural analysis in the areas of stability, seepage, bearing capacity and settlement as necessary for dams.
  • Develop or supervise remedial/modification designs for earth (specifically sand) embankment dams, toe and perimeter drain systems, intake and discharge structures including delivery tunnels, spillways and other appurtenant features.
  • Develop project/program budgets and prepare engineering and construction cost estimates.
  • Generate project design/construction drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare project bid packages and assist in qualification and selection of contractors.
  • Develop ‘Dam Safety Plans’ for related or unrelated activities which have ability to influence dam safety/integrity.
  • Provide dam safety training to in-house staff and outside contractors as required for informational, construction and inspection purposes.
  • Review and update Cooling Pond Quality Program and Emergency Action Plan documents as necessary.
  • Consult with ‘Board of Review’ panel of industry experts as needed on significant operation, maintenance or modification project issues pertaining to dam safety.
  • Train and mentor team members.
  • Under limited supervision/guidance, the successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Apply standard processes/procedures to achieve objectives and goals.
  • Apply sound engineering principles to a broad variety of assignments.
  • Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions.
  • Collaborate within and across business units.
  • Respond as needed during off-hours.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Licensed Florida Professional Engineer (Civil Engineer) or ability to receive FL license within 12 months.
  • 7+ years of experience in dam engineering/design and dam safety analysis or 5+ years of experience in above ground impoundments in Florida.
  • Experience in projects regulated by federal and state agencies.
  • Experience in project management and personnel supervision.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with FERC Part 12D inspections
  • Experience with Maximo or similar enterprise asset management system
  • Six Sigma certification
  • Experience with AutoCAD
