Position Specific Description

The Grid Transformation & Integration Department is seeking a dynamic Principal Transmission Planning Engineer to lead initiatives in transforming and integrating Florida Power & Light's (FPL) transmission systems towards a zero-carbon future. You will play a crucial role in conducting transmission studies, analyzing system performance, and ensuring the reliable and cost-effective delivery of electricity.

 

Job Function:
•    Conduct comprehensive transmission studies and analyze system performance to support FPL's sustainable energy transition.
•    Develop innovative solutions to unprecedented engineering challenges, focusing on reliability and cost-effectiveness.
•    Collaborate with industry working groups, vendors, and policymakers to influence regulations and support corporate goals.
•    Serve as a subject matter expert and primary point of contact for high-complexity projects within the Planning team.

 

Required Skills:
•    Strong technical expertise in load flow, short-circuit, and dynamic analysis.
•    Proficiency in power flow analysis software such as PSSE, PSLF, TARA, or similar.
•    Experience in transmission planning or operations at a major utility, ISO, or RTO.
•    Deep understanding of transmission policy, reliability standards, and regulatory issues.
•    Ability to coordinate activities with multiple internal and external subject matter experts.

 

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
•    Expertise in short-circuit and dynamic stability analysis.
•    Familiarity with simulation software such as VSAT, TSAT, SSAT, ASPEN, CAPE or similar short-circuit or dynamic simulation software
•    Experience with PROMOD or similar production cost analysis tools
•    Proficiency in electromagnetic transient analysis software such as EMTP-RV, PSCAD or similar 
•    Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
•    Strong oral and written communication skills.
•    Computer programming experience (Python, VBA).

 

This role can be carried out at any FPL location within the state of Florida.

Job Overview

The Transmission Planning engineer will be responsible for conducting studies to ensure the reliability of the Bulk Electric System.  This work includes power flow analysis, stability studies, voltage studies, technical analysis of disturbances, implementation of regulatory reliability standards, and coordination of reliability and economic studies with the Regional Transmission Operator.  Other responsibilities include performing interconnection studies for generation and transmission service requests and providing technical support to the Transmission Operations Control Center.  The Planning engineer will study the current and future transmission system configuration, recommend changes to transmission system facilities, perform economic analysis of alternatives, and assist with the preparation of the 10-year transmission expansion plans.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform power-flow, short-circuit, and stability studies of the transmission systems
  • Assess study results to identify future needs for system improvements
  • Perform studies required to ensure compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and Transmission Planning Criteria
  • Perform generator interconnection studies and identify system upgrades or additions
  • Represent utility interest in committees or working groups associated with NERC, and other industry groups
  • Work with design and engineering groups/consultants on required large Transmission Planning projects
  • Prepares communications, and presentations and provides support at meetings
  • Provide leadership to committees or groups as needed
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's - Engineering
  • Experience: 7+ years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's - Engineering
  • Leadership Experience: 2+ years
  • Certified Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certified
