Position Specific Description

The Utility Scale Energy Storage team seeks an innovative Battery Technology Lead to spearhead the design, engineering, and technology evaluation of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). This Engineering Leader role requires comprehensive understanding of all battery components and value engineering expertise to identify and resolve bottlenecks while ensuring optimal performance aligned with power purchase agreements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Technology Leadership: Lead BESS technology assessments, evaluate technical specifications, and serve as primary SME for NextEra's BESS OEMs

System Design: Ensure optimized sizing from point of interconnection through GSU, substations, inverters, and batteries; maintain and upgrade BESS sizing calculators

Market Intelligence: Create weekly Energy Storage News briefs and quarterly technology updates using Bloomberg, Wood Mac, and CEA databases

Technical Evaluation: Conduct performance assessments covering degradation, efficiency, reliability across battery cells, modules, and system integration

Integration & Loss Management: Size DC/AC components considering broader energy ecosystem factors (PV/wind); identify and manage system losses for accurate project feasibility

Contract Alignment: Review power purchase agreements to understand project-specific requirements impacting sizing and overbuild decisions

Cross-functional Coordination: Serve as primary liaison between engineering, supply chain, and project management teams

Innovation Leadership: Conduct due diligence on battery chemistries, recommend pilot projects, and secure funding through FPL and NEER partnerships

 

 This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic business impact, directly influencing NextEra's battery technology strategy and market positioning.

  • Plans and leads project engineers in basic, unique and complex projects
  • Acts as technical liaison and provides training and development for engineering personnel
  • Assumes a lead role on team /assignments and provides direction to others as required
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's - Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program
  • Experience: 6+ years post-Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Supervisor/Management Experience:0+ years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Six Sigma Black Belt Certified
  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certified
  • Master's Degree
  • Six Sigma Master Black Belt
