Position Specific Description
NextEra is seeking to hire an Technical Accounting Project Manager to perform accounting due diligence and research functions for NextEra Energy commodity and commodity-related business activities with a focus on derivative, lease, revenue recognition, consolidation (VIE) and fair value issues surrounding structured commodity contracts.
This individual will utilize technical accounting skills in conjunction with in-depth knowledge of the energy markets and products while analyzing complex energy transactions.
Position Description:
- Lead and own the accounting due diligence process for each assigned deal
- Develop and maintain expert knowledge of derivative, lease, revenue recognition and fair value guidance and related GAAP such as consolidation (VIEs), etc.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of transacting, products and markets
- Implement NextEra’s existing accounting policies and draft new policies as needed
- Read and understand structured commodity and commodity-related contracts
- Determine the appropriate derivative, lease and revenue accounting treatment for contracts
- Prepare and maintain written documentation of these contracts, including positions papers and standard documentation
- Respond to transaction review requests and manage process with commercial personnel
- Identify and analyze key provisions in contracts to reach a conclusion
- Resolve complex accounting issues related to transactions
- Articulate positions taken on these issues to team leader and commercial personnel
- Maintain strong working relationships with front office personnel, attorneys, internal accounting personnel and internal and external auditors
- Manage multiple tasks and projects
- Work with internal and external auditors
- Perform additional due diligence and research projects
Minimum Qualifications – Required.
- Undergraduate Accounting degree or Masters in Accounting
- Licensed CPA
- 6 years total post-undergraduate work experience
- 2 years with audit firm
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment
- Analytical skills for applying technical GAAP to complex transactions
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Process management skills
- Ability to negotiate with internal customers
- Ability to work independently and within team environment
- Self-motivation and sense of ownership and responsibility
- Willingness and aptitude for reading and understanding complex transactions, products and commercial drivers
- Willingness and aptitude for working with technical accounting guidance
