As a member of the NextEra Energy wildlife team, you will face different challenges every day, some of which will be extraordinarily complex. We are seeking a highly skilled and knowledgeable Bat Biologist to join our Environmental Services team as a Subject Matter Expert. The candidate will be highly knowledgeable and have extensive experience in bat biology, conservation, and management with a focus on wind and renewable energy projects, ensuring our projects comply with regulatory requirements and minimize environmental impact. This role will involve providing expertise on bat-related issues specifically related to bat populations affected by wind energy projects and must have experience with development and implementation of bat/habitat conservation plans. We ask our wildlife experts to work alongside multiple disciplines including engineers, developers, operators, permitting specialists, and policy professionals. Ideal candidate will have: 
•    Master of Science, MBA or PhD preferred
•    Sound statistical acumen, interpretation, and analytical ability
•    Working knowledge of ArcGIS
•    Detailed understanding of bat biology, populations, habitat, and behavior
•    Technical expertise on bat-related environmental compliance and permitting for wind energy projects
•    Practical knowledge of developing and implementing bat and habitat conservation plans and strategies
•    Experience with detailed environmental assessments, impact statements, and regulatory submissions related to bat conservation 
•    Technical knowledge of acoustic monitoring equipment and software to analyze bat activity around wind turbines
•    Ability to maintain professional relationships with diverse groups including operation staff, developers, other industry representatives, NGO stakeholders, agency personnel and consultants
•    Proficient at interacting with public and local elected officials at open houses, local zoning meetings or during other outreach events
•    Experience reviewing consultant work related to wind energy wildlife issues
•    Provides strategic advice regarding risk management of protected species and their habitat (avoidance, minimization and mitigation) 
•    Ability to travel up to 30% of the time; often on short notice.

Job Overview

This job is responsible for obtaining approvals, licenses and permits for construction and operation of new and existing company facilities from federal, state, provincial, regional and local agencies. Employees in this job serves as the subject matter expert providing specialized environmental expertise and environmental technical support to ensure compliance with environmental laws, regulations and permits.

Job Duties & Responsibilities


•   Performs comprehensive environmental due diligence reviews, assists with facility compliance audits, and conducts environmental licensing and permitting activities
•   Provides specialized expertise to ensure cost effective environmental solutions that maximize operational flexibility, maximize environmental benefits for costs incurred, and contribute to improved system reliability and customer satisfaction
•   Translates regulations and permits into actionable construction compliance tasks
•   Obtains permit modifications for existing permits and obtains new permits for construction and maintenance activities
•   Provides guidance on alternatives to minimize environmental impacts
•   Identifies, tracks, and analyzes environmental construction compliance performance metrics
•   Reviews, monitors and comments on emerging legislation and regulations that might have an impact on operations compiles input and data to develop company policy and comments and positions presented to regulators
•   Performs other job-related duties as assigned
