Job Overview

The Nuclear Station Plant Equipment Operator will, on direction of the Operations Shift Manager and/or licensed Operators in the Control Room, inspect, service, start and stop turbo-generators, mechanical, electrical, related nuclear equipment and auxiliaries that are not normally controlled from the Control Room including operating radwaste process equipment for water purification and resin transfer in accordance with plant procedures and government regulations.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform minor chemical analysis tests on water purification and filter effluents.
  • Observe plant material condition, charts, gages, instruments and controls, report and record same as required to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facility.
  • Maintains accurate logs and records of equipment and operations in the areas of assignment.
  • Conduct radiation surveys and possess a working knowledge of water treatment equipment.
  • Perform VT-2 inspections.
  • Ensures good housekeeping is maintained in areas of assignment. Required to study, observe, and learn for advancement to the assistant’s classification.
  • May be assigned to the maintenance crew and other occupational groups while the reactor is not in operation or when on relief status and not relieving, to the extent described in the job description for a nuclear operating engineering.
  • Perform their personal Health Physics requirements as needed.
  • Keep the Shift Licensed Operating Engineer informed as to normal and emergency plant operating conditions and results of chemical and radiation analysis as required.
  • Must be knowledgeable of Technical Specifications, quality control, operation, maintenance, emergency procedures and NRC requirements.
  • May be assigned to plant security force and fire brigade which does not require handling of firearms or explosives.
  • Shall not be construed as extending to maintenance work but limited to incidental operational service. 

Required Qualification

Must meet one of the following options:

  • College Courses as follows:
    • Enough college level math that a college will allow you to enroll in Calculus
    • One semester of college level Physics
    • One semester of college level Chemistry (lab not required)
  • Graduate of Navy Nuclear Training Program
  • Completion of INPO Accredited program in Operations area of specialization
  • AS Degree that meets curriculum under ACAD 08-006 uniform curriculum


Pre-Interview Requirements:

  • If the candidate meets one of the above options and is selected for an interview then the candidate must pass the POSS (Plant Operator Selection System) test as part of the interview process.
