Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy is currently seeking a Wind Turbine Control Specialist who can apply diversified knowledge of OEM level controls, SCADA principles, and IT/OT concepts to a broad variety of assignments supporting wind power generation. The employee is responsible for independently interpreting, organizing, and executing assignments supporting wind turbine individual and site-level communication and control. This role is also responsible for providing technical guidance, support, and mentoring to other team members as well as collaborating with cross-functional teams to support business objectives. The successful candidate will have a sense of accountability and urgency required to make informed decisions regarding safety, regulatory compliance, system integrity, and technical scope under limited supervision. Alternative position levels are available for the right candidate. 
Overview:

Employees in this position are responsible for maintaining overall turbine availability and performance for NextEra’s wind asset portfolio. 

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a technical liaison to individuals within and outside the organization. Functions well with limited direction regarding technical matters pertaining site turbine and park level control systems and SCADA applications
  • Completes assignments given in broad terms concerning general objectives and limitations
  • Provides site and remote technical support to operations and business unit personnel on proper use and care of turbine and park distributed IO controller network and PLC systems 
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex computer and OT communication system issues as related to power system operationCan understand, troubleshoot and resolve common network, database, protocol and application issues
  • Familiar with the implementation of NERC Standards as related to SCADA and communications
  • Travels to renewable generation sites occasionally to perform onsite troubleshooting, repair, and upgrades
  • Establishes, modifies, and maintains procedures/guidelines supporting controls and electrical SCADA users
  • Monitors and resolves infrastructure performance, application connectivity, and security related issues utilizing specialized network diagnostic tools and software
  • Assists in the preparation of labor and materials estimates, reviews bids, and assists in overseeing contracted services
  • Displays strong communication and interpersonal skills in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Technical / Functional Excellence/Learning
  • Effective Written and Verbal Communications
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements including some climbing and work in elevated areas
  • Formal training in Electronics, Control Systems, programming, Windows or UNIX, and Networking or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for success in the position

Desired Qualifications:

  • Process Management Concepts
  • Quality Tools and Techniques – Six Sigma Green Belt
  • Working experience with SCADA applications, and PLC’s
  • Background in PLC logic development and troubleshooting
  • Experience with Modbus, OPC, and DNP3 protocols 
  • Experience with Python, SQL, and C languages
  • Working experience with GE WindSCADA and ControlST, Siemens WPS, Vestas VOB and Online Toolkit
  • Working knowledge of power and voltage regulation fundamentals

•   Provides full-time technical support to the operations and business unit personnel
•   Performs system testing and documentation to critical systems during significant changes and/or upgrade
•   Analyzes and identifies the root cause of - and implements comprehensive technical solutions to - complex application deficiencies and system issues
•   Provides technical leadership in the functional specification, design and implementation of new (as well as enhancements to existing) security center applications and tools
•   Develops new (and improves existing) processes with goal of increasing productivity, reducing risk of system failure, promoting efficiency in work flow, and meeting or exceeding the key operational performance targets
•   Establishes, documents and maintains procedures and guidelines related to the day-to-day operational support provided to the operations and business unit personnel
•   Travels to power plants for onsite troubleshooting support
•   Performs other job-related duties as assigned
