Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy's Power Generation Division seeks a Senior Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across our North American portfolio. Reporting to the BESS Engineering Manager and working within a team of fleet engineers, you will own a portfolio of sites and specific equipment categories, driving technical excellence in operations, reliability, and continuous improvement. This role requires independent decision-making on complex engineering issues with limited guidance once fully onboarded.

 

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio & SME Ownership:

  • Serve as technical subject matter expert for assigned BESS sites and equipment systems
  • Technical support for portfolio sites, from troubleshooting to strategic improvements
  • Build deep expertise in assigned focus areas (inverters, BMS, thermal systems, fire protection, etc.)

Operational Support & Troubleshooting:

  • Lead remote technical support for field technicians diagnosing inverter, BMS, and auxiliary system issues
  • Provide clear, actionable guidance to technicians with varying levels of technical expertise
  • Participate in rotating on-call schedule to provide emergency technical guidance
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for equipment failures using structured methodologies
  • Collaborate with SCADA/controls team to diagnose performance issues

Reliability & Continuous Improvement:

  • Develop and implement countermeasures for recurring equipment and performance issues
  • Design and refine preventative maintenance programs to improve system reliability
  • Analyze component failure rates and recommend capital replacement strategies
  • Create work plans and specifications for equipment upgrades and modifications

Data Analysis & Regulatory Support:

  • Compile technical data and conduct analysis to support regulatory compliance efforts (FERC, NERC, state agencies, fire marshal)
  • Prepare technical documentation, failure reports, and performance assessments for diverse audiences including management, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders
  • Support warranty claims with failure analysis and documentation

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering (other engineering disciplines considered with relevant experience)
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in design, installation, commissioning, or operations of Battery Energy Storage Systems, Solar PV, or Electric Vehicle systems
  • Demonstrated experience leading root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions
  • Working knowledge of SCADA systems, energy management systems, or plant-level controls
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences
  • Willingness to travel (5-20%) and participate in on-call rotation

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent structured problem-solving certification
  • Previous experience in fleet management or multi-site technical support roles
  • Deep subject matter expertise in one or more areas:
    • Power electronics and inverter performance optimization
    • Thermal management system design (HVAC, liquid cooling, CFD analysis)
    • Fire protection systems for energy storage (UL 9540/9540A, NFPA 855)
    • Battery Management System architecture and operations
    • Lithium-ion battery chemistry, degradation mechanisms, and cell-level diagnostics
    • Experience with failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) or reliability engineering
