Position Specific Description

Under direct supervision, this job applies diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices to a broad variety of assignments. Technical subject areas include earthwork, foundations, reinforced concrete, structural steel, stormwater management, roadways and heavy load lift plans. Plant equipment of specific interest involves stair structures, cooling towers, solar and BESS support systems, cooling ponds, canals, seawalls, tunnels, pipelines, intake/discharge structures, screens and screen cleaning machinery. The civil engineering intern works on small projects or portions of larger projects. Supports development of standards and engineering guidelines, conducts analysis on system performance and reliability strategy and provides recommendations. Candidates must have cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be considered.Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program required. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Intern will work with other members of the Civil Engineering Fleet Team to evaluate and troubleshoot structural components, foundation capacities, and/or lifting plan approvals
  • Support the development of condition assessment tracking, including inspections, and risk management procedures
  • Apply knowledge to real world operating failure modes experienced in the fleet and support development of recommendations from evaluation
  • Support various power generation teams such as fossil operations, solar operations, cooling pond maintenance, environmental services, project management, etc.
  • Work will likely include opportunities to visit power generating sites for evaluating structures
  • Evaluate and/or develop standards and engineering guidelines based on the most recent codes (steel, concrete, building, etc)
  • Tasks may include use of data analytics software tools (Excel, Python, Minitab, or similar), data science principles, and even some light software coding if applicable to the assignment
  • Work activities may include such items as preparation of reports and/or presentations (in Word, PowerPoint, PowerBI, Excel), calculations, specifications and scope documents as well as generating sketches and drawings in AutoCad format 

Job Overview

To be considered for an internship, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists department with assigned projects
  • Completes challenging projects and assignments
  • Presents final project to senior leadership at the end of the internship
  • Assumes responsibility for own travel, lodging, and transportation necessary to be available for the program
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

  • Maintain active enrollment in a Bachelor or higher degree program
  • Maintain cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
