Position Specific Description

***Remote option available depending on the candidate selected*** States include Florida, Georgia, Texas, Iowa, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Vermont and Washington D.C. 

The Transmission Planning engineer will be responsible for conducting studies to ensure the reliability of the Bulk Electric System.  The Planning Engineer must be able to perform all aspects of steady-state, dynamics, and short-circuit analysis and have experience with electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis.  The Planning Engineer must have extensive experience with modeling inverter-based resources and performing disturbance event investigations.  Job responsibilities include keeping informed of new methods and developments affecting the organization and recommending new tools, practices, or standards.  Other responsibilities include performing interconnection studies for generation and transmission service requests, assessing power plant controller settings, developing remedial action schemes, and providing technical support to the Transmission Operations Control Center.  The Planning Engineer must be a highly motivated self-started that is capable of performing tasks with minimum supervision and oversight.

Primary Responsibilities:

Perform power-flow, short-circuit, and stability studies of the transmission systems.
Assess study results to identify future needs for system improvements.
Perform studies required to ensure compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and Transmission Planning Criteria.
Represent FPL’s interest in committees or working groups associated with FRCC, SERTP,  NERC, and other entities.
Provide leadership to committees or groups as needed.
Perform generator interconnection studies and identify system upgrades or additions.

Preferred Skills:

  • Transmission planning, engineering design and/or operational experience
  • Pursuit of Professional Engineer registration or existing Professional Engineering license
  • Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Strong computer skills including power flow, stability, Microsoft Office Access and other tools
  • Leadership skills and experience
  • Strong communicator both oral and written
  • Be able to ensure the use of sound engineering principles and practices  
  • Experience with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, PSLF, VSAT, TSAT, SSAT, TARA, ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, PROMOD, EMTP-RV, PSCAD or other similar analysis software. 
  • Computer programming experience (Python, VBA)
