Position Overview

NextEra Energy's Grid Control Systems (GCS) team is seeking a motivated college intern to join our dynamic team focused on enhancing grid reliability, operational efficiency, and advancing transmission system technologies. This internship offers hands-on experience in power systems operations, data analytics, and process improvement initiatives supporting critical energy infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in Bachelor's or Master's degree program
  • Major in Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Junior or Senior standing preferred

Technical Skills:

  • Fundamental knowledge of power systems principles and electrical grid operations
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar)
  • Understanding of electrical circuits, power system analysis, and transmission systems
  • Basic knowledge of data analysis, visualization tools, and database management
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and technical documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous internship or co-op experience in utilities, power industry, or engineering environments
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, energy management systems (EMS), or grid control operations
  • Experience with database management, SQL, and data analytics platforms
  • Coursework in power system protection, control systems, renewable energy integration, or grid modernization
  • Familiarity with industry regulatory standards (FERC, NERC, IEEE)
  • Understanding of transmission planning and operational procedures

Key Responsibilities

• Grid Operations & System Analysis: Support daily operational activities, real-time grid monitoring, and transmission system performance analysis while participating in emergency response procedures and system restoration planning

• Network Solutions & Process Enhancement: Collaborate with engineers to develop and improve grid monitoring applications, optimize data input processes for line outage monitoring, and contribute to initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and situational awareness

• Technical Projects & Data Analytics: Participate in power system modeling, reliability studies, and grid performance assessments while analyzing operational data to identify improvement opportunities.

 

Job Overview

To be considered for an internship, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists department with assigned projects
  • Completes challenging projects and assignments
  • Presents final project to senior leadership at the end of the internship
  • Assumes responsibility for own travel, lodging, and transportation necessary to be available for the program
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High school grad / GED
  • Maintain active enrollment in a Bachelor or higher degree program
  • Maintain cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
