Position Specific Description

The expansion of the transmission system will pave the way for a carbon-free future that allows renewables to be implemented in resource optimal locations and transported to load centers. In order to achieve this goal, significant amounts of new transmission infrastructure will need to be built. The NEET Transmission Economic Planner leads the analysis and evaluation of the economic performance of potential transmission development strategies throughout the US and Canada. This position is responsible for both individually performing as well as coordinating intricate economic analysis to identify the most cost-effective and competitive transmission projects to meet identified and projected system reliability, public policy, or market efficiency transmission needs. This position drives critical project planning, including need/solution identification, financial and engineering/design viability, economic and expanded benefit analysis, submittal development, and RTO/ISO engagement.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and leverage analysis to anticipate strategic project sites and routing for new transmission projects, considering anticipated ISO/RTO needs and other business opportunities
  • Replicate ISO/RTO system needs and studies to identify transmission drivers and develop strong transmission solutions
  • Actively engage, understand, and contribute to ISO/RTO planning processes, building strong relationships
  • Contribute to the writing of development proposals for new opportunities, including technical submittals for the identified solutions and analyses performed
  • Provide guidance in the development of transmission policy that supports competitive transmission opportunities
  • Identify enhancements to state-of-the-art tools to better identify optimal transmission opportunities from the analysis of a multitude of scenarios and sensitivities
  • Lead the coordination with internal and external Subject Matter Experts to arrive at the most cost-effective and competitive transmission solutions.
  • Provide planning support to NextEra Energy Transmission’s operating transmission utilities, including strategies for growth and expansion and maintenance of planning models.
  • Structure, execute, and manage contractual arrangements with consultants and subcontractors necessary to support a broad range of transmission planning analyses.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • 10% - 25% travel required.

The successful individual must possess:

  • Experience with common industry economic analytical tools such as PROMOD, GRIDVIEW, UPLAN
  • A strong understanding of the planning processes within the RTOs/ISOs, including reliability and economic/broader benefit analyses
  • Ability to coordinate the work of multiple internal and external SMEs to drive the completion of a comprehensive set of transmission analyses to identify cost-effective and competitive transmission solutions in short windows
  • An understanding of transmission policy and regulatory issues, including interconnection
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience in transmission economic planning studies and RTO/ISO market rules
  • Working knowledge of NERC planning standards and associated reliability analyses


Job Overview

Employees in this role develop and execute plans for new or enhanced generation projects. This job is responsible for resource allocation, schedules, cost and technical adequacy, ensuring the project or transaction is completed in the most cost effective and competitive manner. This position manages all aspects of the business deal and ensures the project is completed on time and within budgetary constraints.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of the day to day transaction process to ensure timely completion as well as a cost effective and competitive results
  • Leads and coordinates key functions such as financial feasibility analyses, engineering/design, project legal review, permitting activities and financial negotiations
  • Coordinates due diligence activities with other internal groups to ensure proper analysis and structuring of assigned projects
  • Acts as liaison between internal and external specialists regarding procurement, contracting, permitting and interconnection
  • Constructs contractual arrangements for project development
  • Negotiates agreements with consultants and subcontractors
  • Ensures compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements
  • Fosters external relationships with customers, third parties and members of the community
  • Identifies opportunities and negotiates power sales contracts
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School Grad /GED
  • Bachelor's or Equivalent Experience
  • Experience:  8+ years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's - Business Administration
