Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy Inc. and Florida Power and Light are seeking a senior level tax professional to join our dynamic, creative organization in Juno Beach, FL.  In this role you will report directly to the NextEra Energy Resources Director of Tax. You will have the chance to impact tax planning and analysis efforts related to our growing regulated business (outside of Florida), including new business development and expansion, rate case preparation and testimony, and income tax accounting.  You will also perform due diligence on potential acquisitions, tax planning and tax assumptions for valuation of potential acquisitions and development projects, rate case preparation related to tax matters, and assistance with income tax accounting, while effectively communicating tax matters to a wide audience.


You will have the opportunity to provide federal and state tax advisory and support services to a relatively new and growing infrastructure division of one of the nation’s leading energy companies.  You will be primarily responsible for a wide range of tax matters related to our regulatory business, along with supporting the tax controversy group in responding to federal and state tax audit inquiries, researching and tracking federal and state legislative and regulatory tax policy, managing and responding to questions and information requests from parent company, investigate and develop written response to questions from regulators on all tax matters, support preparation of tax-related sections of MPSC and FERC regulatory forms, track current developments that could impact regulatory filings, prepare analysis and application of proposed and existing tax laws, regulations, and rulings, prepare and review of all federal, state, and local tax calculations reflected in various regulatory filings.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:
• Strong knowledge of federal and state tax matters in in a regulated utility environment
• Seven or more years of experience in tax with public accounting or law firm and/or large industry tax experience with 3 years of regulated utility environment experience
• CPA, MST, or LLM
• Expertise in dealing with a wide range of tax matters
• Highly organized and a team player
• Willing to work with individuals across all parts of a diversified regulated and competitive energy business
• Excellent communication skills

Job Overview

Employees in this position are responsible for one or more of the following: tax research, planning, compliance, forecasting, analysis, and defense of tax positions.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages tax related projects, including system maintenance and/or development
  • Prepares and/or reviews tax returns and corresponding tax work papers and files
  • Researches law, regulations, administrative rulings and court cases and presents proposals to lawfully minimize tax liability
  • Researches and drafts responses to inquiries from government agencies regarding tax filings, compliance, and other claims
  • Provides and/or verifies tax assumptions and tax results in project models
  • Leads project teams to improve quality, efficiency, predictability and/or transparency
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience: 7+ years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's - Accounting / Finance
  • LLM - Master of Laws
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
