Position Specific Description

Nextera Energy is looking for a Senior Manager to report directly to the Senior Director, Property and Indirect Tax and will lead the property tax team with minimal supervision.  The ideal candidate will have experience leading a team of property tax professionals engaged in multi-state property valuation, compliance, negotiation, forecasting, bill payment, and streamlining of processes.  Experience should include complex property valuation; electric utility and stand-alone generation is ideal.  Prior leadership experience is required. In addition to the full complement of Property Tax services, the Senior Manager will be responsible for process management initiatives (Accelerate, Six Sigma), technical training of the team, legislative initiatives and support, and tax planning participation/oversight.  The Senior Manager should possess strong technical appraisal skills – command of the Income, Cost, and Market Approaches to value.  This role will manage property tax liability in excess of $700 MM for assets owned in FL and in excess of $125 MM for assets owned in 35+ states excluding FL.  This includes assigning, overseeing, and reviewing the annual compliance filing function.  Once compliance filings have been completed, the Senior Manager will oversee and direct value assessment negotiations with state and local assessors.  The Senior Manager will interface regularly with senior leadership and will be the property tax liaison between Corporate Tax and FPL Finance and Nextera Energy Resources Finance leaders.  This individual will be accountable for multi-year forecasting of property tax expenses for FPL, NEER, and all other NEE affiliates and achieving these annual targets. Additionally, a professional designation(s) is also strongly encouraged, such as a CMI, ASA, or other appraisal designation.

Property Tax services include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Information requests/data gathering (internal/external)
  • Tangible personal property tax return preparation and review
  • Assignment of specific and general research
  • Annual project appraisals – project valuation
  • Property tax forecasting – complex and aggressive
  • Complex assessment negotiations – Supervise and participate
  • Bill review, approval, and payment
  • Process management / Six Sigma review / annual Accelerate process
  • Identification of operating plan items and IT related automation initiatives
  • Frequent communication of progress and results to FPL and NEER Finance
  • Appeal and Litigation analysis and support
  • Legislative and regulatory support
  • Property tax audit defense
  • Tax planning initiatives
  • Merger/Acquisition/Development due diligence

Job Overview
