Position Specific Description

The Utility Scale Energy Storage team is looking for an innovative and dynamic Project Engineer who is passionate about renewable energy. In this position you will be heavily involved with battery augmentation projects from conception through execution, to include exposure to cross-functional teams across the NextEra Energy Resources organization. You have the critical responsibility of planning, designing, and executing multiple energy storage augmentation projects. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope, engineering oversight and consulting across cross functional teams to deliver a best-in-class product. You will be part of a growing team of experts who not only provide excellent data-driven inputs and analysis but are also customer service oriented with internal and external stakeholders. 

Employees in this role are strong problem solvers, blending creative and analytical skills to solve complex integration of batteries of differing technologies to existing sites. Successful candidates will have acute attention to detail with proven abilities to identify and apply lessons learned, implement process countermeasures, create tools and standardize work practices to maximize the performance and functionality of battery energy storage systems. You will utilize data from various internal and external sources to perform technical due diligence and propose storage & hybrid solutions to support our customers’ evolving needs. As a support function, you will work collaboratively across the organization to support design, construction and commissioning.

 

Duties & Responsibilities
•    Perform detailed design engineering of electrical, structural and civil aspects of utility-scale energy storage augmentation projects
•    Manage multiple concurrent battery augmentation projects from conception through execution, working closely with external Engineers of Record, Project Managers, and permitting, procurement, interconnection and construction teams
•    Prepare technical scopes of work for incorporation into contract documents
•    Influence project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work, including close collaboration with and oversight of external Engineers of Record
•    Maintain familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas
•    Collaborate with suppliers to successfully integrate major equipment
•    Collaborate with multi-disciplined teams for problem solving, process improvement opportunities, and system integration and controls
•    Support energy storage augmentation strategies through technical and market analysis
•    Identify value engineering opportunities as well as emerging technologies prospects
•    Support and enhance team project management tools and battery degradation models
•    Perform other job-related duties as assigned

 

Preferred Work Experience

•    An SME in substation or utility scale energy storage design and/or project management, with established expertise in one or more of the following areas:
     o    Power electronics
     o    Battery storage system design
     o    Substation design
     o    Generation tie design
•    Design and/or operation of large-scale power generation or processing plants involving adherence to regulatory requirements while maximizing the performance and reliability of technically complex systems
•    Hands-on experience or strong knowledge of construction methods, including foundations, trenching, electrical terminations and testing, and best safety practices
•    Strong knowledge of technologies in energy storage including varying battery chemistries, power conversion units and DC-DC converters
•    Lithium-ion battery storage safety: Familiarity with UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, applicable IFC/IBC sections
•    Familiarity with interconnection studies and GIA material modification adjustment (MMA) processes, particularly in WECC and CAISO
•    Construction permitting and contracting experience
•    Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives
•    Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively conveying technical and non-technical concepts to diverse audiences

Educational Requirements

•    Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Mechanical engineering or related field from an ABET accredited program
•    5+ years of proven engineering experience
