Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy is seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to join our Enterprise Data Program, supporting our mission to build America's clean energy infrastructure. This role will leverage advanced analytics, machine learning, and statistical modeling to drive data-driven decision making across our generation, transmission, and customer operations. The successful candidate will work with large-scale energy datasets to optimize operations, enhance customer experiences, and support our renewable energy initiatives.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Data Analysis & Modeling

  • Develop and implement advanced statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and predictive analytics solutions to solve complex business problems across generation, transmission, and distribution operations
  • Design and execute experiments to test hypotheses and measure the impact of data-driven initiatives
  • Create forecasting models for energy demand, renewable generation, and market conditions

Enterprise Data Solutions

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for data monetization and operational optimization
  • Build scalable data pipelines and automated analytical workflows using cloud-based platforms
  • Develop dashboards and visualization tools to communicate insights to stakeholders at all levels

Strategic Analytics

  • Support strategic initiatives related to renewable energy expansion, grid modernization, and customer programs
  • Conduct market analysis and competitive intelligence to inform business strategy
  • Partner with engineering teams to optimize power plant operations and maintenance schedules

Data Governance & Quality

  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to enterprise data standards and best practices
  • Document methodologies, assumptions, and findings for reproducibility and knowledge sharing

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Python, R, or similar programming languages for data analysis
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, and experimental design
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, or similar)

Domain Knowledge

  • Understanding of energy markets, grid operations, or renewable energy systems preferred
  • Knowledge of time series analysis and forecasting techniques
  • Experience with IoT sensor data, SCADA systems, or industrial datasets a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with distributed computing platforms (Spark, Hadoop)
  • Knowledge of optimization techniques and operations research
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks in the energy industry (FERC, NERC, etc.)
  • Experience with A/B testing and causal inference methods
  • Background in power systems engineering or energy economics

Job Overview

This position is responsible for developing algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (i.e., “Big Data”).

  • Develops machine learning, optimization and other modeling solutions
  • Prepares comprehensive documented observations, analyses and interpretations of results including technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses
  • Works with big data and distributed computing platforms
  • Develops software and contributes to product development
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience: 4+ years
