Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy/Florida Power and Light is seeking a senior civil, structural or geotechnical engineer to lead all analysis and design activities for its power plant cooling reservoir dams including appurtenant water resource facilities and associated structures.  Responsibilities include administering dam safety program and driving continual process improvement in addition to assuring necessary modifications are consistent with proper operation and maintenance of high hazard dams.  Other duties include engaging in project engineering/management activities associated with other power plant and corporate facilities not directly related to dams.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee dam safety program for power plant cooling reservoir dams at three sites in Florida and one site in Spain.
  • Perform dam safety inspections at Florida sites including quarterly, semi-annual and annual as well as special operation and maintenance inspections (experience with FERC Part 12D inspections preferred).
  • Perform necessary activities to complete required regulatory certifications for dams at Florida sites.
  • Conduct or supervise geotechnical/structural analysis in the areas of stability, seepage, bearing capacity and settlement as necessary for dams.
  • Develop remedial/modification designs for earth (specifically sand) embankment dams, toe and perimeter drain systems, intake and discharge structures including delivery tunnels, spillways and other appurtenant features.
  • Develop “Dam Safety Plans” for related and unrelated projects which have the ability to influence dam safety/integrity.
  • Provide dam safety training to in-house staff and outside contractors as required for informational, construction and inspection purposes.
  • Develop project/program budgets and prepare engineering and construction cost estimates.
  • Generate project design/construction drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare project bid packages and assist in qualification and selection of contractors.
  • Review project implementation/construction coordination plans and provide input.
  • Train and mentor team members.
  • Florida Professional Engineer or P.E. in another state with ability to obtain Florida P.E. license within 6 months.
