Position Specific Description

The Principal Power Plant Thermal Performance Engineer will be a key technical leader responsible for optimizing the thermal performance of power plants within our portfolio. This role requires extensive expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics to evaluate and enhance the efficiency and reliability of power generation systems. The successful candidate will lead cross-functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and drive strategic performance improvement initiatives, ensuring that NextEra Energy remains at the forefront of the industry.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the monitoring and analysis of the thermal performance of power plants, including turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, cooling systems, and other thermal systems.
  • Develop and validate advanced performance models to assess system efficiency, identify areas of improvement, and benchmark against industry standards.
  • Prepare and present detailed engineering reports, performance evaluations, and actionable insights to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Direct and manage performance improvement projects, including upgrades, modifications, and retrofits, ensuring timely and cost-effective execution.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive thermal performance databases, monitoring systems, and software tools for data analysis and reporting.
  • Provide expert technical support for plant operations, troubleshooting complex thermal performance issues, and recommending corrective actions.
  • Stay informed about the latest technology advancements, industry trends, and regulatory changes affecting power plant thermal performance.
  • Lead and participate in project planning, budgeting, and scheduling activities related to thermal performance initiatives.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations in all performance improvement activities.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree or Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in thermal performance engineering within the power generation industry.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermal system modeling.
  • Proven experience with performance analysis software and tools (e.g., PEPSE, Epsilon, PI System, etc.).
  • Strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Deep knowledge of power plant operations, maintenance practices, and industry standards.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to various plant sites as required.
