Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy Resources’ Engineering & Construction (E&C) division is seeking a Principal Metering Engineer to provide end to end technical leadership and oversight of revenue metering systems supporting renewable energy development, engineering design, and construction execution. This role is specifically focused on meter programming, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure metering systems meet all technical, contractual, and commercial requirements.

 

The Principal Metering Engineer is accountable for ensuring that all metering related activities align with project specifications and commercial agreements throughout the full project lifecycle—from initial concept and engineering design through construction, commissioning, certification, and turnover. This position will work closely with cross functional internal stakeholders—including engineering disciplines, development, business management, project management, and transmission services—and will also coordinate with external utilities, ISOs/RTOs, metering vendors, and EPC partners as needed.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated expertise in programming, configuring, and validating revenue grade meters
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for complex metering and substation metering related issues
  • Comprehensive understanding of substation design, metering schemes, communications, and advanced metering technologies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong organizational and time management capabilities
  • Experience supporting commercial, regulatory, and contractual metering deliverables
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and oversee third party engineering service providers

 

Job Overview

This position entails the interpretation and organization of metering requirements as communicated by customers, commercial operations, and internal stakeholders. The incumbent will collaborate with cross-functional teams to prepare comprehensive technical metering documentation and integrate metering specifications into engineering designs. Core responsibilities encompass the assessment, selection, and application of advanced knowledge in metering concepts and industry best practices across diverse projects.   The incumbent will become proficient at programming advanced metering systems.  Additionally, the individual may be tasked with supervising external Metering Engineers of Record and overseeing project management activities. Demonstrated proficiency in project management and advanced technical expertise are essential qualifications for this role.

 

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Able to program advanced metering systems and configure meter settings/templates
  • Provides engineering, design, and development support
  • Tracks and reports on project contractual execution and design progress
  • Delivers company standards, policies, and support of organization
  • Prepares communications, presentations and provides support at meetings
  • Formulates research, and develops improvement measures
  • Works with other departments within the organization to establish customer requirements
  • Ability to work extended hours
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's – Engineering
  • Experience: 3+ years in relevant P&C/Substation/Metering Engineering experience, and Project Management

A minimum of 3–5 years in metering programming is required. Candidates should read protection and control drawings, understand instrument transformers (CTs, PTs, CVTs), be familiar with various metering technologies—especially Schneider Electric ION-8650 meters—and know meter-to-meter schemes, iron and copper loss compensation for transformers, generator tie line loss compensation, sharing losses, and meter programming or metering template creation.  

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s – Electrical Engineering
  • Master’s – Engineering Management
  • PMP Certification
  • Experience: 5+ years P&C/Subs/Metering Engineering experience. With 2+yrs of project management experience

 

Additional desirable experience in any of the following related areas: 

  • Prior work experience working for an Independent System Operator (ISO) (IE: SPP, MISO, CAISO, etc)
  • Reviewing Large Generator Interconnection Agreements (LGIAs) \Reviewing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) 
  • Retail service provider agreements 
  • Substation design 
  • Metering standards 
  • Metering auxiliary loads 
  • Bench testing meters 
  • Communication protocols such as modbus, DNP3, MV90 
  • SE ION-8650 meters
    • Schneider’s ION Setup & PME Software Suites
  • SEL-735 meters 
    • SEL’s AcSELerator Software
  • Orion LX interface (Novatech NCD3)
  • IEEE-519 Harmonic Standard 
  • Quickly learn, adapt, and apply best practices 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, communication skills, business acumen, management ability, and technical writing  
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PPT, Word, Vizio, OneNote)
  • Familiar with Python
  • Proficient in utilizing A.I. agents and A.I. prompting tools
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
