Position Specific Description

       

The Principal Accountant – FPL Accounting reports to FPL Assistant Controller. The principal accountant’s key responsibilities will include project management support as well as preparing and analyzing internal and external financial reports and schedules in compliance with GAAP and regulatory (FERC and FPSC) accounting requirements. This includes the performance of independent research and analytical activities as specified by senior management.  The ideal candidate will have familiarity with GAAP and SEC regulations and an ability to build productive working relationships across the organization in a positive and collaborative manner.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of monthly and quarterly reports, including but not limited to:
    • FPL Earnings Summary
    • FPL GAAP to Regulatory comparative analysis
    • FPL balance sheet and income statement quarterly variance analysis
  • Ensure the overall accounting accuracy of FPL and subsidiaries special projects and act as FPL Controllership liaison for accounting implementations
  • Support for the quarterly investor presentation earnings release and quarterly external reporting filings
  • Project management for FPL and subsidiaries transactional and/or regulatory initiatives including rate cases
  • Provide oversight and accounting support for FPL subsidiaries to help ensure accuracy of financial information.

 

Miscellaneous Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct reporting and/or accounting research projects as assigned
  2. Maintains good understanding of, and applies, GAAP, FERC, SEC Regulations, Sarbanes-Oxley, and related company policies, practices and procedures.
  3. Presentation of accounting areas/issues to concisely and clearly articulate to senior management
  4. Identifying and recommending changes to processes to enhance the accuracy of accounting data and/or efficiency of the department.
  5. Project management skills inclusive of setting timelines/project plan, establishing assignments/priorities, and delivering according to project plan.
  6. Responsible for SOX compliance, including design and effectiveness of the assigned SOX processes.
  7. Support review of Earnings Surveillance Reports for FPL and FCG.

•   Reviews changes in technical accounting literature, develops positions and present to management
•   Maintains awareness of accounting issues being considered by regulatory bodies and advises management of important matters
•   Ensures consistent application of accounting policies
•   Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

•  Bachelor's - Accounting / Finance / Business
•  Experience: 6+ years

Preferred Qualifications


•  Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
•  Master's - Business Administration
•  Master's - Accounting / Finance
•  Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
