Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy Marketing, LLC is looking for a Principal Accountant reporting to our Senior Manager Accounting MTM, Reporting and Forecasting. 

In this role you will: 

  • Support the mark to market (MTM) accounting for the energy trading accounting function, and related reporting for the regulated and unregulated trading and marketing groups
  • Support the P&L and cash flow reporting and forecasting process for the unregulated trading and marketing group
  • Prepare financial reports that are in compliance with GAAP and adjusted earnings policies, in a timely manner, that accurately reflect the financial position, operating results and cash flows of NEE’s trading & marketing activities
  • Maintain SOX Compliance by ensuring financial data integrity, monitoring and maintaining a strong control environment
  • Provide accounting support, financial planning and analysis to the respective trading and marketing business units
  • Provide support to management on the balance sheet, income statement and cash flow impact of various trading strategies and transactions

 

Specific Responsibilities

 

  1. Accounting and Financial Reporting

 

    1. Recording MTM and reporting of bilateral, exchange traded and Independent System Operator (“ISO”) transactions related to electricity, natural gas, coal, oil, renewable energy credits and emission allowances
    2. Daily and monthly reporting of trading results including variance analysis on any trader P&L discrepancies
    3. Daily review on all deals entered into Phoenix for proper accounting treatment
    4. Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close
    5. Create and maintain Phoenix Accounting Master Reference Data, including Legal Entities, Portfolios, Profit Centers and Charge Types
    6. Ensure that Phoenix transactions are mapped to the correct General Ledger Accounts in SAP
    7. Ensure commodity contracts and interest rate swaps recorded and reported in compliance with ASC 815 Derivatives and Hedging and ASC 820 Fair Value Measurements
    8. Responsible for accurate and timely preparation of company derivative and fair value financial statement footnote disclosures

 

  1. Business Unit Financial Planning & Analysis Support

 

    1. Input monthly P&L forecast for trading business units based on analysis provided to and discussions with Senior Director and Senior Manager
    2. Prepare and submit forecasted balance sheet and cash flows for unregulated trading and marketing business unit
    3. Prepare monthly Trading P&L and review results with trade floor personnel and Executive leadership
    4. Prepare monthly MOPR operating cash flow for the unregulated trading and marketing unit including variances to plan and forecast.
    5. Prepare monthly budget vs. actual and variance explanations:
    6. Liaison with FP&A Center of Excellence on trading and marketing business units G&A / O&M budgets
    7. Provide Accounting and Financial support for all Operational questions, as needed

 

  1. SOX compliance

 

    1. Identify and report any compliance issues and maintain data integrity
    2. Lead, monitor and support audit requests timely and accurately

 

  1. Special Projects

 

    1. Provide support to department IT development projects as needed, including SME requirements, User Acceptance testing and Post-Production verification
    2. Assist special projects as needed such has software implementation and enhancements, Six Sigma projects and GAAP implementation
    3. Other projects as assigned by Senior Manager

 

Ideal Candidate will have

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Master’s – Accounting/Finance
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certified
  • Expertise in Energy Trading Accounting
  • Proficient in SAP, Phoenix and Microsoft Business Intelligence (MSBI)
  • Advanced Excel Skills
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, with proven analytical skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in order to effectively communicate guidance and recommendations to management
  • Process improvement mindset
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Accounting experience in public or large corporate environment

Job Overview

Employees in this role develop accounting policy through analysis of GAAP and business practices. Ensures accounting treatment is practical, cost-beneficial and accurately portrays the economic substance of business transactions.

•   Analyzes proposed transactions for structure and proper accounting treatment under authoritative accounting literature
•   Reviews changes in technical accounting literature, develops positions and present to management
•   Maintains awareness of accounting issues being considered by regulatory bodies and advises management of important matters
•   Ensures consistent application of accounting policies
•   Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

•  Bachelor's - Accounting / Finance / Business
•  Experience: 7+ years
