Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy Resources is seeking a Director to lead origination and development of new nuclear generation projects, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and advanced reactor technologies. This high-impact role drives cross-functional development from concept through major decision milestones at America’s largest energy infrastructure developer.

  • Advance new nuclear generation opportunities from concept through gated decision milestones
  • Develop and maintain project development plans including nuclear siting and licensing strategies using analytics to optimize schedule, cost, risk, and commercial outcomes
  • Collaborate across departments on nuclear siting, environmental, licensing, supply chain, engineering & construction, transmission, legal and commercial teams
  • Present development updates and investment cases to executives
  • Direct vendor engagements and technology evaluations

 

Job Summary

Ownership of nuclear development initiatives from concept through gated milestones, integrating siting, licensing, commercial structuring, and cross-functional execution. Provides clear analyses and recommendations on scope, schedule, cost, and risk to support senior management decision-making and advance development investments.

 

Additional responsibilities the position will entail:

  • Help lead the commercial approach for nuclear development: define cost and financing strategies; align potential government support (tax credits, grants, loans); establish risk-sharing and pricing terms; prepare customer proposals.
  • Implement a gated development plan to manage scope, schedule, cost, and regulatory risk: set milestones, maintain risk registers, and coordinate mitigation across siting, licensing, supply chain, and execution.
  • Drive projects at identified sites: confirm site readiness, align schedules, and integrate licensing and environmental workstreams.
  • Identify and prioritize new candidate sites: complete load-driven screening, preliminary environmental reviews, site assessments, and secure land control.
  • Build and maintain relationships with advanced reactor technology providers; lead structured evaluations and teaming discussions.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or related field
  • 10+ years of energy project development with a track record leading large, complex projects from concept through major investment decisions
  • Strong commercial acumen (contracts, PPAs, revenue models) and financial literacy (project economics, incentives, risk)
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-functional communication, collaboration and executive presentation
  • Relevant experience in nuclear development and commercial structuring

 

Preferred Skills

  • Advanced degree (MBA or MS Engineering)
  • Experience in nuclear operations or licensing; familiarity with SMR/advanced reactor technologies
  • Experience with NRC processes, environmental permitting, and stakeholder engagement
  • Experience with DOE Energy Dominance Financing and federal tax credits
  • Background in supply chain for large energy projects

Job Overview

Employees in this role are responsible for leading and coordinating key functions of a project such as financial feasibility analysis, engineering/design, project legal review and financial negotiations. The position plays a key role in building strategic relationships and executing major contracts necessary to support the Company’s generating business growth initiatives. This role reviews and oversees the development of key project agreements. This role is responsible for all aspects of the business deal and will be involved in the closure of multiple projects.

  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with internal stakeholders and external strategic partners
  • Assembles and leads internal cross functional, multi-disciplined teams through the solicitation and negotiation processes
  • Provides overall leadership and drive key decisions during negotiations
  • Delivers on contracting objectives and proforma requirements
  • Delivers contracts that position the internal project execution team for maximum success
  • Manages the contracting budget and schedule for assigned projects
  • Provides periodic updates to and interact with senior management
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School Grad/GED
  • Bachelor's or Equivalent Experience
  • Experience:  10+ years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's - Business Administration
