Position Specific Description

This is a terrific opportunity for someone to oversee communications that help inform millions of customers and stakeholders while enhancing the FPL brand. In this newly created position, the Lead Communication Strategist will work closely with the Senior Director of FPL Communications to drive the strategic priorities of the company. This person will help coordinate the work of 25 communicators who support the company’s largest business units and are responsible for media relations and customer communications throughout FPL’s service territory. In particular, this new position will oversee the writing, editing and strategic distribution of FPL-related stories across multiple customer channels, including newsletters, websites, media and social media. This person will lead cross-functional meetings and manage content calendars for the respective channels to maximize the reach and engagement of each with our stakeholders.

 

The ideal candidate has experience in leading the development and execution of successful PR campaigns and communication strategies. The individual must be a critical and fast thinker, highly organized and creative, an exceptional communicator (verbal and written), collaborative with good follow-through, confident and even-tempered (must be able to think clearly in a crisis) and must have proven ability to engage with executives, peers, and external audiences, including media.

 

Additional Job Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Serving as “chief of staff” for the Senior Communications Director of FPL, providing strategic guidance, content planning and coordination for the larger team
  • Providing support for FPL’s major business units, including developing and implementing thoughtful strategies and tactics to help deliver on business objectives
  • Leading cross-functional planning meetings and managing content calendars to ensure FPL is telling its story effectively to all stakeholder groups and advancing its corporate messages of affordability, reliability, clean energy and community involvement.
  • Organizing and executing proactive public relations activities and effective communications with executives, employees, stakeholders, media and the public.
  • Serving as spokesperson as needed.
  • Serving as a leader of a high-performing team which is expected to consistently deliver high-quality measurable results in all aspects of the function, including:
    • Communication and outreach plans
    • Proactive and reactive media engagement, including media events
    • Collaborative PR campaigns
    • News releases
    • Customer newsletters
    • Social media strategies

 

Job Overview

Employees in this role are responsible for providing excellent communication support to assigned business unit partners as measured by completion of required planning and execution, and client feedback. Employees in this role are responsible for using business and customer insights to support the development and implementation of communication strategies and tactics to improve customer and stakeholder perception as measured by campaign results, which may include media coverage, and brand and message awareness results. Employees in this role will be expected to provide excellent media relations support as measured by media results. This role may require the individual to provide direction and guidance to a small team of peers while having strong planning capabilities, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supports development and execution of strategic communications plans, key messages, programs and campaigns to support business objectives using research/analytics. Creates visual and written content for internal and external channels (newsletters, digital and social media, video, etc.)
  • Supports internal business partners on communications strategy and provides executive and communications support. Serves as liaison for assigned business units and serves as project manager for campaigns and cross-functional initiatives
  • Drafts media statements/press releases, answers media inquiries, serves as media spokesperson, including afterhours media duty. Proactively builds relationships with the media and seeks out opportunities to tell our company story
  • Supports planning and cross-functional execution of events
  • Measures results and evaluates the effectiveness of communications and tactics to drive improvements
  • Supports emergency events, as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School Grad / GED
  • Bachelor's or Equivalent Experience
  • Experience: 6+ years
