The Environmental Services Technology Leader position integrates environmental expertise with technological acuity to support NextEra’s commitment to developing new, creative, and comprehensive energy solutions. The Environmental Services Technology Leader position is a strategic role to accelerate the implementation of the most suitable, effective, and innovative technological solutions available, and help keep NextEra at the forefront of our rapidly evolving industry as the world’s leading sustainable energy company.


Applicant must have relevant experience in environmental permitting and regulations as well as Geographic Information Systems, deep learning models, programming, and other relevant technology development tools and processes.  The ideal candidate must also possess strong leadership skills and behaviors with demonstrated abilities to excel in multi-disciplinary settings.

 

The Environmental Services Technology Leader is intended to enhance Environmental Services’ capabilities across numerous domains, including Geospatial and AI Initiatives, Emerging Technology Evaluations, as well as Business Unit and company-specific process oversight and innovation.  The Environmental Services Technology Leader will participate as a core member of the NextEra geospatial squad to ensure alignment and collaboration across business units on geospatial initiatives and best practices in order to avoid duplication of efforts, share resources and expertise, and standardize geospatial workflows and outputs.  The position will develop tools that improve the user interface increasing efficiency and effectiveness of internal site assessments and interface with corporate tools (e.g. Unifier, OMNI). The position will also provide training and support to Environmental Services staff.  

 

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
•    Geospatial Leadership: lead the development of enterprise geospatial tools, maintain the environmental exclusions and geospatial risk evaluation process, promote more effective use of internal resources, implement standardization of geospatial workflows, and enhance collaboration across business units; build tools that communicate across systems to improve data flow and efficiency and effectiveness of individual team members.
•    Geospatial Squad Leader: represent environmental services on the geospatial squad to ensure alignment and collaboration on geospatial initiatives and best practices across business units.
•    AI Development: lead the development of AI processes and tools to support Environmental Services
•    Evaluate and Implement Emerging Technology: research and evaluate other emerging technologies that can be used to support daily environmental functions. For example, use of drones and other remote sensing technologies to streamline resource analysis.
•    Business Unit Process Development and Maintenance: work with IT and technical SMEs to maintain and improve processes for Environmental Services, including enterprise platforms used to manage project information, workflows, budgets, schedules, contracts, invoices, and documents. 

 

The Ideal candidate will have:

•    Knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting processes
•    Experience applying location-based analytics to a variety of business practices using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.
•    Experience in maintaining and developing web-based GIS applications.
•    Experience in AI/Machine Learning applications for environmental data analysis and modeling.
•    Familiarity with enterprise project management systems.
•    Experience in evaluating and implementing emerging technologies, such as drones and remote sensing, for environmental applications.
•    Proficiency in Esri’s ArcGIS ecosystem (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online) for spatial data management, analysis, and visualization.
Experience with programming languages such as Python or R for automating geospatial workflows and data processing.
•    Familiarity with remote sensing software and platforms like ArcGIS Image, ENVI, or open-source alternatives for processing and analyzing drone, satellite, or aerial imagery data.
•    Knowledge of visual programming and scripting languages (e.g., ModelBuilder, Python) for automating tasks, data processing, and integrating different software components.
•    Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
•    Excellent communication and collaboration abilities to work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
•    Project management skills, experience with Change Management, use of quality tools (e.g., Six Sigma) and/or experience leading geospatial and technology initiatives 

 

Job Overview

This job is responsible for obtaining approvals, licenses and permits for construction and operation of new and existing company facilities from federal, state, provincial, regional and local agencies. Employees in this job serves as the subject matter expert providing specialized environmental expertise and environmental technical support to ensure compliance with environmental laws, regulations and permits.

Job Duties & Responsibilities


•   Performs comprehensive environmental due diligence reviews, assists with facility compliance audits, and conducts environmental licensing and permitting activities
•   Provides specialized expertise to ensure cost effective environmental solutions that maximize operational flexibility, maximize environmental benefits for costs incurred, and contribute to improved system reliability and customer satisfaction
•   Translates regulations and permits into actionable construction compliance tasks
•   Obtains permit modifications for existing permits and obtains new permits for construction and maintenance activities
•   Provides guidance on alternatives to minimize environmental impacts
•   Identifies, tracks, and analyzes environmental construction compliance performance metrics
•   Reviews, monitors and comments on emerging legislation and regulations that might have an impact on operations compiles input and data to develop company policy and comments and positions presented to regulators
•   Performs other job-related duties as assigned
