Position Specific Description

We are seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Market Risk Management leader to lead a team responsible for the comprehensive oversight of market and commodity risk across our trading activities. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a seasoned risk professional who combines deep technical expertise with strong commercial judgment and a passion for building best-in-class risk capabilities.

Our Market Risk Management team brings together several disciplines that are often managed separately at other organizations, including market and commodity risk management, valuation and controls, and independent price verification (IPV). We believe these capabilities are inherently interconnected and that integrating them provides a more complete and informed view of trading exposures, valuation risk, and overall portfolio risk.

The successful candidate will bring significant experience in energy and commodity markets, with a strong understanding of trading products, valuation methodologies, market risk measurement, and control frameworks. Equally important, this individual will be a hands-on leader who can engage deeply with complex positions and valuation issues while developing the people, processes, analytics, and governance required for a first-class risk management function. The ability to communicate complex risk matters clearly and credibly to trading, finance, and senior leadership will be critical.

This role reports to the Executive Director, Head of Market Risk and Analytics and is based at NextEra Energy’s headquarters in Juno Beach, Florida.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled, hands-on market risk and product control professional with proven experience supporting a trading floor environment. The successful candidate will combine strong technical capabilities with sound commercial judgment and a deep understanding of traded markets, particularly power and other energy commodities.

This individual will be expected to work closely with traders, originators, and other commercial and functional teams to develop a comprehensive understanding of trading strategies, portfolio exposures, valuation, and risk. The role requires an ability to move seamlessly between detailed analysis and broader risk oversight, while effectively communicating complex issues to both commercial stakeholders and senior management.

The position will lead a team with responsibilities of developing team capabilities, strengthening risk management processes and controls, and driving continued improvement and automation across the function.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Partner closely with traders, originators, and other business teams to develop a deep understanding of trading strategies, positions, and associated risks, and translate that understanding into effective risk management and control processes.
  • Develop, enhance, and implement market risk methodologies and analytics, including Value at Risk (VaR), stress testing, scenario analysis, and other portfolio risk measures.
  • Monitor, analyze, and communicate market and commodity risk exposures, including assessing portfolio risk against established limits and escalating material risks or limit exceptions as appropriate.
  • Oversee the production and distribution of daily P&L and attribution, position, exposure, and risk reporting, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and appropriate explanation of key drivers.
  • Provide robust challenge and independent oversight of trading results, valuations, exposures, and material changes in portfolio risk.
  • Play a significant role in month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, partnering with Finance, Accounting, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate and well-controlled reporting.
  • Support the ongoing development and enhancement of valuation controls and independent price verification processes, particularly for complex or less-liquid energy products.
  • Partner with Technology and business stakeholders on trading and risk management system enhancements, implementations, and automation initiatives, with a focus on improving scalability, data quality, and control effectiveness.
  • Maintain compliance with SOX and other applicable control requirements, while proactively identifying opportunities to strengthen, simplify, and automate the control environment.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor a team of market risk professionals and analysts, establishing high standards for technical excellence, commercial understanding, accountability, and professional development.
  • Foster a strong risk-aware culture, promote constructive challenge, and model the highest standards of integrity and professional judgment.
  • Champion the company’s values of Excellence, Doing the Right Thing, and Respect in interactions across the organization.
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
