Position Specific Description

 

Employees in this role have responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating cutting-edge innovation and pilot projects across NextEra Energy's technology portfolio. This role will need strategic leadership to drive business transformation through advanced analytics, machine learning, and emerging technologies. The position encompasses responsibility for energy forecasting systems, performance engineering initiatives, and AI/ML solution development across solar PV, energy storage, transmission, and wind technologies. 

 

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Innovation
•    Serve as subject matter expert (SME) for innovation in assigned technical areas including energy forecasting, performance optimization, and emerging       technologies
•    Lead solution development for AI/ML and optimization projects from project scoping through production deployment
•    Develop and maintain internal systems for forecasting energy market prices, behind-the-meter facility load, and solar generation
•    Research, develop, and implement automation and optimization tools to enhance operational processes
•    Write and maintain production-level code in Python, R, SQL, and other relevant programming languages

Project & Team Management
•    Facilitate scrum ceremonies and coordinate with product stakeholders to deliver strategic priorities
•    Direct Performance Engineering task force, triaging optimization, forecast, and controls-related production incidents
•    Collaborate with and lead multi-disciplinary teams of internal and external industry subject matter experts
•    Manage data science interns and foster professional development

Strategic Development & Stakeholder Engagement
•    Collaborate with business and technology stakeholders to define strategic roadmap and drive digital innovation
•    Generate internal customer leads for value-added AI/ML projects
•    Negotiate project scope and deliverable commitments with key stakeholders
•    Deliver presentations to senior management and peer data scientists on technical advances and AI ethics
•    Organize departmental data science workshops and knowledge-sharing initiatives

Technical Specialization
•    Investigate machine learning solutions to detect and diagnose performance risks for battery energy storage systems
•    Design, prototype, and test solutions to energy-related scientific and mathematical problems
•    Develop machine learning and operations research models including: behind-the-meter battery dispatch optimization, predictive maintenance scheduling, causal models for wind turbine performance, game theory-based battery dispatch strategy, asset reliability modeling, and retail electricity theft detection
•    Maintain familiarity with industry trends and practical application of existing, new, and emerging technologies

Quality & Process Improvement
•    Implement Six Sigma best practices to improve response times, identify root causes, and prevent fault reoccurrence
•    Create standard processes for database administration, ETL, and quality control
•    Support and foster innovative technologies that enable business transformation
•    Communicate technical concepts to stakeholders and provide data-driven recommendations

 

The ideal candidiate will have: 

•    Proficiency in programming languages: Python, R, SQL
•    Deep understanding of integrated IT environments and cloud architecture
•    Modern software development and deployment practices
•    Experience with APIs following industry best practices
•    Cloud & DevOps proficiency
•    Experience with code repositories (GitHub)
•    Experience with LLM integration, RAG, and prompt engineering
•    Experience with agent orchestration frameworks (LangGraph, LangChain, AutoGen, or similar)
•    Experience with PowerApps/Power Automate
•    Proficiency in VBA
•    Background in detailed analysis of complex systems involving large dataset
•    Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities
•    Ability to manage change and drive transformation within a large organization
•    Six Sigma background or equivalent process improvement experience
•    Experience in energy markets, forecasting, or utility operations

 

Industry Knowledge

•    Understanding of energy systems including solar PV, energy storage, transmission, and wind technologies
•    Familiarity with energy market dynamics and regulatory environment
•    Experience with performance optimization in energy systems

Job Overview

This position is responsible for developing algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (e.g. “Big Data”).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops machine learning, optimization and other modeling solutions
  • Prepares comprehensive documented observations, analyses and interpretations of results including technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses
  • Works with a variety of datasets, including timeseries data and “big data” requiring analysis on distributed computing platforms
  • Writes software in R, Python or similar languages and contributes code to product development teams
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

  • Experience: 2+ years
