Position Specific Description

The Data Science Solutions Manager is a high energy individual with a strong background in software engineering and data science. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Enterprise Data Science and AI Strategy for NextEra Energy - this role will focus on supporting the development of machine learning models, applications, and business and operational process innovations by working with stakeholders to understand their business needs, translate them into data and architecture opportunities, and then set the direction of improvement initiatives.


This a strategic role for a strategically minded individual who must be capable of thinking broadly about the opportunity to drive AI enabled transformation across the enterprise, and pivot quickly to driving the actual day-today-work of the team from prototype to solution delivery.

 

The candidate will work to stay informed of, and disseminate, best practices and advances in Data Science techniques and cloud infrastructure. As a leader in the Enterprise Data Science and AI Strategy Team, the Data Science Solutions Manager will play a key role in envisioning, designing, coding, testing and improving the solutions that help NextEra Energy continue to be recognized as the most innovative and successful renewable energy company in the world. 


Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Day-to-day managerial tasks such as expense approval, time approval, performance reviews, compensation reviews, etc.
  • Regularly interfacing with internal stakeholders to prioritize opportunities for the team
  • Tracking projects and driving work on them through to completion.
  • Designing processes for more efficient and high-quality operation of the team.
  • Coordinating work with complementary technology teams throughout the Company
  • Staying informed of best technical practices from the fields of machine learning and software engineering to identify and help fill tooling or skilling opportunities for the team
  • Hiring, mentoring, coaching, and honing the performance of team members.
  • Helping to plan the strategic vision of the team.


The Successful Candidate:

  • Experience developing software and employing software engineering best practices.
  • Player-coach leader with expert level knowledge of data science and/or AI capabilities with the ability to code when needed.
  • Experience with direct management experience leading a team of data scientists and analysts, including but not limited to managing compensation and performance discussions.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and drive to stay updated on new technologies in the rapidly evolving field of AI and machine learning.
  • A successful candidate will be comfortable in a fluid, entrepreneurial and very high paced environment.
  • We employ a modern tech stack in our work spanning a variety of programming languages and tools used, including but not limited to: Python, Angular, Github, Spark, AWS, Serverless, and Docker. Deep experience with most if not all of these technologies is a plus.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in science and mathematics-oriented fields like Statistics, Operations Research, Physics, Computer Science, Economics, etc.
  • 5+ year’s experience with direct management experience leading a team of data scientists and analysts.
  • Ability to partner with executives, business stakeholders to define objectives.
  • Strong sense of ownership and initiative while empowering others to do the same.
  • Experience hiring, mentoring, and managing a team of decision scientists.
  • Strong applied analytics and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with large datasets, modeling, statistics, A/B & multivariate testing.

Job Overview

This position guides teams in the execution of agile initiatives to deliver customer value. Employees in this role train and coach in the use of Scrum, Lean, Kanban, XP, and scale agile framework practices.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Trains and coaches leaders, teams, Product Owners, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mindset
  • Contributes in Communities of Practice (CoP), within the agile network
  • Promotes and encourages collaboration and transparency and builds trusting relationships between business, delivery, and other entities within the organization
  • Facilitates periodic synchronization meetings across several different onsite and distributed delivery teams
  • Prepares program and release backlogs, as well as team and program objectives
  • Tracks, promotes, and publishes completed program features and program and team objectives
  • Manages risk and dependencies, communicates and escalates impediments to facilitate transparency, and reduces bottlenecks
  • Embraces a continuous improvement mindset, and drives the use of agile engineering best practices and innovation
  • Reports on standardized program-level metrics, and understands, tracks, and operates within the program budget
  • Plays an instrumental role in the organization’s Agile transformation, acts as a change agent, and shows strong leadership skills with a positive and collaborative attitude
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s or Equivalent Experience
  • Experience: 8+ years
  • Supervisor/Management Experience: 2+ years
