Position Specific Description

GridLiance plans, develops, owns and operates regulated transmission assets in the United States.



The Lead Planning Engineer reports directly to the Executive Director, System Planning and serves as technical expert on transmission planning studies, including development, analysis, and reporting in support of company goals. (This individual will work with Engineering to manage, direct, and conduct transmission studies for construction, operations and maintenance purposes. In collaboration with the Corporate Development team the qualified individual will develop plans to support acquisitions, partnership development and support new transmission development; and in working with Compliance, he/she will develop transmission reports with mitigation plans and transmission owner/planner documents for compliance purposes. This well-rounded person will actively participate in RTO planning processes.




  • Support company’s transmission project development, acquisition and operations activities in the area of electric transmission.
  • Identify transmission system needs/opportunities and provide solutions for reliability and economic enhancements to the transmission system to further company’s transmission development initiatives utilizing transmission system and production cost modeling software. 
  • Perform power system modeling including electrical load flow, short circuit, and transient stability studies.  Perform power system economic modeling including production cost simulation studies. 
  • Coordinate, review, and interpret transmission studies (short circuit, transient stability, and load flow) performed by utilities and outside consultants.
  • Provide technical support for project development and acquisition activities in the evaluation of transmission system issues within the various NERC and RTO regions. 
  • Assist in the development of transmission strategies.
  • Support transmission asset operations and regulatory compliance related activities. 
  • Represent company’s interests on appropriate regional and national policy making committees, work groups, or task forces.
  • Keep abreast of FERC regulations regarding transmission policies, Open Access Transmission Tariffs and the evolution of ISO and RTO transmission strategies.



  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Power Engineering or Electrical Engineering is required
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering or Electrical Engineering or an MBA (preferred)
  • Registered Professional Engineer (preferred)
  • Thorough knowledge of electric power system network analysis (including the use of power system software such as PSS/E), transmission planning and assessment techniques, and transmission system reliability standards
  • 5+ years technical and/or professional experience.
  • Ability to work independently from home and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in use of computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).
  • Demonstrated record of flexibility and initiative.  Ability to deliver results in a high-stakes environment while maintaining confidence and poise.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate areas of executive management concern, integrate varied perspectives, and respond accordingly.
  • Ability to be flexible in ambiguous situations and align the interests of multiple stakeholders

  • Demonstrated experience in building external relationships and leading commercial deals from identification to close
  • Must have leadership experience collaborating with senior leaders
  • Superb oral communication, writing and editing skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.  Hands-on strategic approach and team player mentality with high degree of accountability.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Use of computer screens for longs periods of time.
  • Ability to work in an environment that may require lifting of 40+ pounds.
  • Ability to travel (>25%).
