Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy’s advising business provides energy and sustainability expertise and services to large industrial, commercial, and institutional energy users throughout North America.

The advisory business is looking for a Senior Director of Business Development to lead the origination efforts nationally.  This position is responsible for developing and implementing the go-to-market strategy, originating new clients, following up on marketing efforts, as well as developing and managing a sales team.  The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience in the energy and renewables industry. Further, the ideal candidate will have a track record of success in building, training, and managing sales teams, developing relationships with Fortune 1000 customers, and closing business.


In this role, the successful candidate will be expected to have a mastery of energy markets and the solutions that are relevant for enabling customers to meet their energy and sustainability goals, including renewables, distributed generation technologies, commodity markets, energy efficiency, mobility, and others.  He or she will work with subject matter experts to develop creative solutions and structure transactions with prospects and clients.  The successful candidate will also need to work effectively with internal areas such as legal and regulatory to ensure successful completion of opportunities.


Job Duties & Responsibilities


  • Identify new prospects, understanding prospect needs and providing solutioning as part of the business development process
  • Manage, develop, and nurture existing customer relationships, seeking opportunity to grow account services, value, and revenue
  • Manage all day-to-day sales and project origination efforts; communicate effectively to all internal stakeholders participating in these efforts
  • Identify opportunities via internal and external channels to ensure an adequate project pipeline
  • Collaborate with the consulting practice SMEs to ensure successful origination of viable consulting engagements and solutions procurement
  • Review, prepare, and negotiate term sheets and contracts with clients to secure engagements
  • Build, train and develop a sales team to support efforts and expected growth
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Job Overview

This job is responsible for selling fixed-price, indexed, and complex structured energy supply contracts for commercial and industrial customers. This includes prospecting new business opportunities, developing strategic plans and identifying process improvements. Leaders in this job oversee the implementation activities between Gexa Energy and other parties, including maintaining vendor relationships and agreements, and identifying business development opportunities. The primary performance metrics are sales margin and deal profitability. This role will have team management responsibilities.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

•   Maximizes sales through effective territory management
•   Provides input in planning and directing all aspects of the company’s sales strategies, objectives and initiatives
•   Develops pricing policies, including volume discounts and terms and conditions, for high-profile customers and channel partners
•   Implements business plan to effectively manage assigned market segment
•   Maintains existing key customer relationships
•   Develops and implements strategies for expanding the company's customer base
•   Ensures deals and contracts are flowing through the transaction process in accordance with risk management procedures
•   Establishes performance goals for direct reports and monitors performance on a continual basis
•   Ensures that the market transactions systems are processing deals correctly and contracts are flowing through the sales and contract administration process
•   Ensures that key metrics are being tracked and reported to management
•   Performs other job-related duties as assigned
