The Senior Transmission Planning Engineer for the Transmission Fundamentals team will help design, build, and use a unique software tool that looks beyond the existing planning processes to identify and evaluate the transmission needs of the future grid. You will then collaborate with other teams to develop new renewable energy and transmission solutions across the United States and Canada. This position is part of a team performing technical modeling and analysis to identify, evaluate, and support development of new opportunities on the transmission system. Successful candidates will have experience developing novel analysis approaches or tools.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaborate with colleagues to create new analysis tools and models to identify, design, and evaluate new renewable energy and transmission projects, both within and beyond the current planning process horizons
• Contribute to developing new modeling capabilities
• Identify enhancements to state-of-the-art tools to better identify optimal renewable energy and transmission opportunities from analysis of many scenarios and sensitivities
• Perform powerflow, production cost, and economic analyses using off-the-shelf and custom tools
• Collaborate with other teams to develop identified projects
Desired Qualifications
• A power systems background
• An understanding of the planning processes within utilities and RTOs/ISOs, including reliability and economic analyses
• Experience with common powerflow and production-cost software such as PSS/E, PowerWorld, PowerGEM TARA, PROMOD, GRIDVIEW, UPLAN, PLEXOS, and Enelytix
• Programming skills in Python
• Experience developing novel analysis approaches or tools
• Ability to communicate complex technical information
• Ability to coordinate activities with multiple internal and external SMEs
Job Overview
The Transmission Planning engineer will be responsible for conducting studies to ensure the reliability of the Bulk Electric System. This work includes power flow analysis, stability studies, voltage studies, technical analysis of disturbances, implementation of regulatory reliability standards, and coordination of reliability and economic studies with the Regional Transmission Operator. Other responsibilities include performing interconnection studies for generation and transmission service requests and providing technical support to the Transmission Operations Control Center. The Planning engineer will study the current and future transmission system configuration, recommend changes to transmission system facilities, perform economic analysis of alternatives and assist with the preparation of the 10-year transmission expansion plans.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform power-flow, short-circuit, and stability studies of the transmission systems
- Assess study results to identify future needs for system improvements
- Perform studies required to ensure compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and Transmission Planning Criteria
- Perform generator interconnection studies and identify system upgrades or additions
- Represent utility interest in committees or working groups associated with NERC, and other industry groups
- Work with design and engineering groups/consultants on required Transmission Planning projects
- Prepares communications, and presentations and provides support at meetings
- Provide leadership to committees or groups as needed
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's - Engineering
- Experience: 5+ years
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's - Engineering
- Leadership Experience: 1+ years
- Certified Professional Engineer (PE)
- Six Sigma Green Belt Certified

The estimated base pay for this position is $104,800.00 to $157,200.00 per year. Starting pay will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, experience, qualifications, job-related and industry knowledge and skills and education/training.
