Position Specific Description
NextEra Energy Transmission is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Project Director for Transmission Development. This individual will play a key leadership role in supporting competitive transmission development projects within the MISO region, while also providing strategic oversight and support for other regions, including PJM and SPP. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in transmission planning, regulatory processes, and stakeholder engagement to ensure the successful execution of large-scale, high-impact projects that advance NextEra Energy’s commitment to a cleaner, more resilient energy grid.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the development of competitive transmission projects from initiation through to permitting, construction, and operation. This includes ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Focus on competitive transmission development primarily within the MISO region, while also providing strategic support for transmission projects in other regions, including PJM and SPP. Engage with stakeholders, utilities, and regulatory bodies in these regions to advance project success.
- Navigate the complex regulatory landscape for transmission development, including FERC, state-level, and regional transmission planning processes. Work closely with regulators, policymakers, and external partners to ensure compliance and streamline project approval processes.
- Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, including regional transmission organizations (RTOs), utilities, local governments, landowners, and other project partners to promote successful project development.
- Develop and manage project budgets, forecasts, and financial models. Ensure that all financial aspects of the project are well-documented and aligned with corporate objectives.
- Work closely with internal teams, including engineering, legal, regulatory, and operations, to ensure that transmission projects align with company goals and objectives. Provide leadership and direction across all phases of the project lifecycle.
- Identify and mitigate project risks, ensuring that issues are addressed proactively. Provide strategic recommendations and solutions to overcome development and execution challenges.
- Lead and mentor a team of project managers and other development professionals, fostering a collaborative and performance-driven culture. Encourage professional growth and knowledge sharing across the team.
Job Overview
Employees in this role develop and execute plans for new or enhanced generation projects. This job is responsible for resource allocation, schedules, cost and technical adequacy, ensuring the project or transaction is completed in the most cost effective and competitive manner. This position manages all aspects of the business deal and ensures the project is completed on time and within budgetary constraints.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Manages all aspects of the day to day transaction process to ensure timely completion as well as a cost effective and competitive results
- Leads and coordinates key functions such as financial feasibility analyses, engineering/design, project legal review, permitting activities and financial negotiations
- Coordinates due diligence activities with other internal groups to ensure proper analysis and structuring of assigned projects
- Acts as liaison between internal and external specialists regarding procurement, contracting, permitting and interconnection
- Constructs contractual arrangements for project development
- Negotiates agreements with consultants and subcontractors
- Ensures compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements
- Fosters external relationships with customers, third parties and members of the community
- Identifies opportunities and negotiates power sales contracts
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- High School Grad /GED
- Bachelor's or Equivalent Experience
